Apical's noise reduction technology is built upon its space-variant Retinamorphic processing algorithm framework.
For noise which is random in time, Apical's motion-compensated temporal noise reduction filter leads to effective noise reduction for motion video without blurring. The algorithms are based on accurately measurement of the local motion in a given video sequence, and local time averaging based on the degree and direction of motion.
A complementary technology is intra-frame noise reduction where, for each individual image, areas of visible noise are identified and smoothed, without affecting texture detail or edges. This kind of processing is highly effective both for random sensor noise and for correlated noise such as that produced by JPEG or MPEG compression algorithms. Automatic and adaptive control of kernel size enables effective deblocking filters based on this technology.
Both technologies incorporate accurate noise profiling algorithms.
